# How to analyze your Instagram with AI: find out which posts bring you customers (not just likes)

Likes don't pay the rent. How to use ChatGPT or Claude to see which posts bring you messages, bookings and sales, for free or with your account connected.

![A Brazilian travel content creator in her late twenties, with dark curly hair pulled back and a terracotta linen shirt, smiles as she jots something down in a notebook next to her laptop and a small camera, on a terrace in Cartagena's old town with a yellow wall, bougainvillea and a dome in the background.](https://socialmaker.ai/blog/analyze-instagram-with-ai/portada.webp)

Your sunset reel got 2340 likes and zero bookings. The “boring” carousel where you explained what the tour includes got 96, but 14 people messaged you and 4 booked. If you only look at likes, next month you'll repeat the wrong post.

You don't need to be a numbers person to see it. You give your insights to ChatGPT or Claude and it tells you what's working, in plain words. Here's how to get your data for free, what to ask the AI, a tool to compare your posts and how to let the AI read your account directly, without copying anything.

## Likes, views, messages: which number tells you if you're selling

Instagram shows you lots of numbers and almost all of them are useful, but they don't say the same thing. Some measure how many people saw you and others, how many took the step of messaging you or going to your link. Those last ones are the closest thing to a sale.

| Number | What it is | What it tells you about your sales |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Views** | How many times your post was shown or played. If the same person saw it three times, it counts three. | How much exposure you got. On its own, it doesn't tell you if you sold. |
| **Viewers** (formerly reach) | How many different people saw it at least once. | How many people you reached. |
| **Interactions** | Likes, comments, saves and shares. | Whether people liked it. Saves and shares say more: someone wanted to see it again or sent it to someone else. |
| **Followers** | How many people started following you because of that post. | New people who might buy from you later. |
| **Profile activity** | What people did on your profile after seeing it: visiting it, tapping the link in your bio or a button. | Real interest: they went to see who you are, your prices or your availability. |
| **Comments with your keyword and messages** | How many people messaged you because of that post (for example, they commented PRICE). | The closest thing to a sale you can count from Instagram. |

What Instagram doesn't know is who bought from you: that happens in your messages, your link in bio or your calendar. That's why a good analysis puts both parts together: what happened on the post and what happened after.

And there's a reason why what people like most doesn't always sell. According to [Adam Mosseri](https://www.instagram.com/p/DFFyRp-pINJ/), the head of Instagram, what matters most for showing your post to more people is how long they watch it, the likes and how many times it gets sent in messages. The algorithm rewards what entertains; your sales depend on what gets people to message you.

## Step 1: get your numbers (free)

You have two options and both are free: your phone, to look and take notes, and your computer, to download everything at once. For the analysis to be useful, gather at least your last 10 to 20 posts.

1. On your phone, open your insights · In the Instagram app, go to your profile and tap **Professional dashboard**. If you don't see it, go to **More → Settings and activity → Insights**. Choose **Last 90 days**: that's as far back as the app goes for your whole account.
2. Look at each post · Tap a post and then **View insights**. That's where you'll find its views, interactions, profile activity and the followers it brought you. Each post and each reel keeps its insights for up to 2 years.
3. Save the numbers · Downloading them from the app is only for paid Meta One plans, so write the numbers down in a spreadsheet or take screenshots: ChatGPT and Claude can read screenshots too.
4. On your computer, download them · Go to **Meta Business Suite**, pick your account at the top left and open **Insights → Content**: you'll see a table with the results of each post. With the **Export** option you download it as a file to give to the AI.

**Tip**

Seeing “Viewers” where it used to say “Reach”? It's the same thing: how many different people saw your post. If your insights are in another language, give them to the AI as they are: it understands them just the same.

## Step 2: ask ChatGPT or Claude to read them

Open ChatGPT or Claude, upload the file (or paste the numbers from your posts) and start with a message that gives it context. These prompts work the same in both:

- Prompt for Claude or ChatGPT · Context first · `I have a [what you sell] business in [city or online]. Here are the insights from my latest Instagram posts. I care about customers, not likes: when you analyze them, look first at messages, profile visits and link taps. If a piece of data isn't in what I gave you, tell me instead of guessing.`
- Prompt for Claude or ChatGPT · Your best posts · `Which 3 of my posts got the most people to message me, visit my profile or tap my link? What do they have in common: format, topic, day, whether they showed the price or asked a question?`
- Prompt for Claude or ChatGPT · Likes vs. customers · `Compare my posts with the most likes with the ones that brought the most messages and link taps. Are they the same? If not, explain the difference with examples from my own posts.`
- Prompt for Claude or ChatGPT · The ones that fall short · `Which posts got lots of views but almost nobody took the next step? For each one, tell me what you'd change (the caption, the first image, the invitation to message me) so people message me.`
- Prompt for Claude or ChatGPT · Your 2-week plan · `Based on what you see, put together a 2-week plan: what to post each day, in what format and what word to ask people to comment so they message me.`
- Prompt for Claude or ChatGPT · In plain words · `Explain my numbers as if I knew nothing about social media: 5 sentences, no technical words, and the one thing I should change this week.`

**Important**

The numbers are enough for the analysis: don't give the AI your customers' names, phone numbers or conversations. And if you don't want your chats used to train it, in ChatGPT turn off **Improve the model for everyone** in **Settings → Data controls** (or use a temporary chat), and in Claude check **Settings → Privacy** (or use an incognito chat).

## Which of your posts sells? Test it with your numbers

Before you open the AI, try this with three of your posts: the one with the most likes and two others. Enter how many people messaged you from each one (comments with your keyword or messages) and how many customers came out of it.

Which of your posts sells?

Likes · Messages · Customers · Likes · Messages · Customers · Likes · Messages · Customers

Messages: comments with your keyword or messages you got from that post. Customers: sales or bookings that came from it.

What your numbers tell you

- Sunset reel · **2,340 likes** · **0 customers**
- Tour carousel · **96 likes** · **4 customers**
- Group photo · **310 likes** · **1 customer**

**Sunset reel** got more likes, but **Tour carousel** brought you more customers. Make more posts like that one.

29% of the people who messaged you from **Tour carousel** bought from you.

Swap in your own numbers: nothing leaves your browser.

If the one people liked most isn't the one that sold most, you already know what to repeat. And if none of them brought customers, it's almost never the content's fault: it's that nobody knows what to do after seeing it.

A video of you serving your tacos can get thousands of views. The orders come in when the video says what to write to order.

## What the AI doesn't see (and how to make it see it)

When you give it your insights, the AI sees the same as Instagram: views, likes, profile visits. It doesn't see who messaged you to buy, who tapped your booking button or who booked. With half the data, it may recommend more of what was already getting you likes.

The fix is to give each post a door you can count: a word to comment (PRICE, TOUR, BOOK) and an [auto-reply](https://socialmaker.ai/automations) that sends the link to whoever writes it. That way every interested person gets counted and you know which post brought them. They don't even have to write the word on its own: if they comment “I want the price pls”, it counts too.

In SocialMaker, each automation shows you how many messages it sent, how many people tapped your link and how many booked. On Pro and Max, **View funnel** shows it step by step: how many commented, how many got the message, how many tapped the button, how many opened your link and how many booked.

## With your account connected, just ask

If you connect Claude or ChatGPT to SocialMaker, you don't have to copy anything. The AI reads your latest posts with their likes and comments, and the results of each automation: how many commented your keyword, how many got the message, how many tapped the button or the link and how many booked. With that, it matches what people liked with what sold.

Animation: the Claude app with SocialMaker connected. You ask which post from October brought you the most bookings. Claude uses SocialMaker, matches your posts with the results of your automations and answers: the sunset reel got 2340 likes and zero bookings; the carousel about what the tour includes got 96 likes, 14 comments with the word TOUR and 4 bookings. It offers you the same automation for your next carousel, you say yes and it's turned on.

You ask which post brought you the most bookings and it answers with your numbers. Then, if you want, it sets up the automation for the next one.

Try requests like these:

- Prompt for Claude or ChatGPT · Your best-selling post · `@SocialMaker Which post from the last month brought me the most customers? Match its likes and comments with the results of its automation.`
- Prompt for Claude or ChatGPT · Where you're losing them · `@SocialMaker Which of my automations has lots of people commenting but few tapping the link? What would you change in the message?`
- Prompt for Claude or ChatGPT · Your link in bio · `@SocialMaker Look at my link in bio for the last 30 days: which button gets tapped most, where are people coming from and which button should go first?`
- Prompt for Claude or ChatGPT · Repeat what works · `@SocialMaker For my next post, set up the same automation my best post has, with the word TOUR, and show it to me before turning it on.`

To let it read your posts, give it permission to see **Posts** when you connect it (it's off by default). Link in bio analytics are part of the Pro and Max plans, just like connecting your assistant, and you can [try Pro free for 30 days](https://socialmaker.ai/pricing). You'll find the step by step in [how to connect Claude to Instagram](https://socialmaker.ai/blog/connect-claude-to-instagram) and in [how to connect ChatGPT to Instagram](https://socialmaker.ai/blog/connect-chatgpt-to-instagram).

![A Puerto Rican surf instructor in his early thirties, with dark curly hair and a navy rash guard, kneels on the sand and uses his hands to show his student, who has short platinum hair and a black wetsuit, how to stand up on the board; she laughs as she tries, on a calm beach in Rincón.](https://socialmaker.ai/blog/analyze-instagram-with-ai/surf.webp)

A surf school doesn't need more likes: it needs to know which post fills Saturday's classes.

## What to do with what you find

The analysis pays off if you change something the following week. Ideas depending on what you sell:

- **If you sell products (clothing, food, crafts):** check whether the post that brought the most messages showed the price or the product in use. If so, repeat that format with another product and ask people in the caption to comment PRICE.
- **If you offer services by appointment (tours, classes, consultations):** posts that explain what's included, how long it lasts and when there are open spots tend to bring more bookings than the prettiest ones. Add the word BOOK or TOUR and have the reply take people straight to your [booking page](https://socialmaker.ai/bookings).
- **If you're a creator selling coaching or a course (moving to Canada, remote work, personal finance):** the post that brings the most customers is usually the one that answers a specific question (“how much money do I need to move to Canada?”). Make a series with the 5 questions you get asked most and give a free guide to whoever comments the word.
- **If you sell food or run a restaurant or shop:** compare your daily specials posts with your behind-the-scenes ones. If the specials bring orders and the others only likes, use the second kind to grow and the first to sell.
- **For everyone:** make the post that sold most the first button on your [link in bio](https://socialmaker.ai/link-in-bio) and pin it to the top of your profile. And repeat the analysis every month: what worked in October won't necessarily work in December.

## Mistakes when analyzing your Instagram

- **Looking only at likes.** They're the easiest part to count and the one that says the least about your sales.
- **Comparing very different weeks.** A Black Friday post next to one from an ordinary Tuesday won't tell you which format is better.
- **Drawing conclusions from too few posts.** With fewer than 10, take what the AI says as clues, not rules.
- **Giving the AI your customers' data.** The numbers are enough for the analysis; it doesn't need names, phone numbers or conversations.
- **Believing everything the AI says.** If it tells you something odd, ask it to show you which numbers it got that from. If it can't, ignore it.

### Can ChatGPT see my Instagram insights?

Only if you give them to it: by uploading the file you export, pasting your numbers or connecting it to a tool that reads your account. With SocialMaker connected, ChatGPT reads your latest posts with their likes and comments and the results of your automations.

### Which is better for analyzing Instagram, ChatGPT or Claude?

Both read a table of numbers well and understand the same prompts. Use the one you already have: what changes the result most is the data you give it and how clearly you tell it what matters to you.

### Do I need to pay for ChatGPT or Claude for this?

No. On ChatGPT's free plan you can upload up to 3 files a day ([OpenAI help](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8555545)), and the free version of Claude also analyzes spreadsheets. If you run out of uploads, paste the numbers or upload screenshots. What's paid is connecting your assistant to SocialMaker so it reads your account without you copying anything: that's on the Pro and Max plans.

### How many posts do I need for this to work?

With 10 to 20 posts you can already see patterns. With fewer, take the conclusions as clues and look again when you have more.

### What's a good engagement rate on Instagram?

As a reference, [Socialinsider](https://www.socialinsider.io/social-media-benchmarks/instagram) measured an average of 0.48% per post in 2025 (likes and comments divided by followers) across 67 million brand posts: carousels 0.55%, reels 0.52% and photos 0.37%. It helps you see if you're on track, but a high rate doesn't guarantee customers: for that, look at messages and bookings.

### Can I analyze my competitors' accounts?

You can paste what's public into the AI (their posts, their captions, how many likes they get) to see which topics work for them. Their insights, like views or messages, can only be seen by the account owner.

Likes tell you what people like; your messages, your links and your bookings tell you what sells. Get your numbers today, give them to the AI with the prompts above and repeat what brings you customers. If you want each post to have its own door for counting interested people, [set up your first auto-reply for free](https://socialmaker.ai/free-instagram-automation).
