# Your post went viral: how to answer 10,000 comments without losing sales

A real case: over 12,000 people answered in 3 days on the Starter plan. What to set up before a post goes viral, Meta's limits and what it costs.

A post goes viral on a Tuesday at 6 p.m. By Wednesday night it has thousands of comments: “price”, “info”, “where can I buy it?”. If you answer by hand, you get through the first hundred and the rest are left waiting. And the people who wait buy from someone else.

This isn't a made-up example. In October 2026, a Facebook account on SocialMaker's Starter plan got comments from over 12,000 people in 3 days, and every one of them got their message within the same minute. Over 2,000 opened the link. We don't show the account to protect its privacy: the numbers are real and rounded.

**Real case · Starter plan** Real data, rounded

- **4,400** people commented
- **4,400** got their message
- **–** opened the link

Busiest hour: 716 comments, about 12 a minute

By hand, at 1 minute per comment: over 200 hours

The real case, day by day: people who commented, got their message and opened the link.

This guide is so that, when it happens to you, every comment turns into a conversation: what to set up beforehand, what your customer sees, what limits Meta sets and what it costs to answer thousands of people.

## It works for any business that sells on social media

A viral post can happen to anyone who sells on social media: the sewing and accessories workshop, the person who 3D prints or laser engraves, the personalized gift shop, the creator selling her course or the person who imports products to resell. In every case it works the same way: a word in the comments and a message with the link.

![A young redhead with freckles holds up a 3D printed planter next to her printers](https://socialmaker.ai/blog/viral-post-comments/m-3d.webp) Facebook: 3D printing

![A young man checks a freshly engraved wooden coaster next to his laser machine](https://socialmaker.ai/blog/viral-post-comments/m-laser.webp) Instagram: Laser engraving

![A young creator records a lesson for her course in front of the camera](https://socialmaker.ai/blog/viral-post-comments/m-creadora.webp) Instagram: Online courses

![A young man opens a box of new inventory in his storage room and smiles at his phone](https://socialmaker.ai/blog/viral-post-comments/m-importados.webp) Facebook: Imported products

Six businesses, one idea: the person comments the word and gets their message with the link within the same minute.

## Why a viral post is lost if you answer by hand

Speed matters. In a study published in Harvard Business Review, companies that contacted a lead within the first hour were nearly seven times as likely to have a sales conversation as those that waited even an hour longer ([HBR, 2011](https://hbr.org/2011/03/the-short-life-of-online-sales-leads)). And in the Sprout Social Index 2025, 73% of consumers said they'll buy from a competitor if a brand doesn't respond on social ([Sprout Social](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/press/the-days-of-trend-chasing-are-over-new-research-from-sprout-social-reveals-a-third-of-consumers-think-jumping-on-viral-trends-is-embarrassing-for-brands/)).

- **There isn't enough time:** at one minute per comment, 12,500 comments are over 200 hours nonstop.
- **Messages get buried:** whoever wrote first ends up under hundreds of new notifications.
- **You copy and paste the same reply,** and the same comment repeated hundreds of times is exactly what makes Instagram or Facebook slow your account down.
- **You sleep:** in the real case, the busiest hour brought 716 comments, about 12 a minute. A viral post doesn't wait for you to open your phone.

## The fastest way: ask Claude

If you're on the Pro or Max plan, connect Claude to your SocialMaker account and ask it to set everything up before you post: the automation, the rotating replies and the reminder. It builds it in your account and asks you before turning anything on. Copy one of these prompts and paste it into the Claude chat:

- Prompt for Claude · For all your posts · `Create an automation for all my posts: when people comment PRICE or INFO, reply publicly with 5 different rotating sentences and send them a message with the link to my catalog on a button.`
- Prompt for Claude · The reminder · `Add a friendly reminder to that automation for people who didn't open the link, saying the launch price is still available.`
- Prompt for Claude · Your next post · `Set up an automation that turns on by itself on my next post: when people comment WANT, send them the link to my booking page.`

Prefer to do it yourself? It takes a few minutes in [SocialMaker's auto-replies](https://socialmaker.ai/automations). These are the steps.

Only until October 31

## What to set up before it happens

1. Pick a short word that's easy to type · PRICE, INFO or LINK, with no accents or symbols, so nobody misspells it. The word is recognized even inside another word, so avoid ones that are part of common words. More in [how to choose your keywords](https://socialmaker.ai/help/keywords).
2. Write several replies for the comment · In a viral post you'll reply thousands of times. With several rotating sentences, your account doesn't post the same text over and over: the Starter plan allows up to 5, Pro up to 10 and Max up to 15. Read [how to avoid getting blocked for repeating the same comment](https://socialmaker.ai/blog/instagram-auto-replies-without-getting-blocked).
3. A short message with a single button · What you promised, one button and nothing else. In the real case, 17% of the people who got the message opened the link.
4. A reminder for people who didn't open it · From Starter, a friendly message hours later for people who didn't tap the button, which stops on its own if the person replies. See [how reminders work](https://socialmaker.ai/help/automatic-follow-ups).
5. Cover all your posts · Choose “All my posts” or “My next post”. Auto-replies work with new comments, from the moment you turn them on: the ones that came in before stay unanswered.
6. Have your link in bio ready for visitors · A viral post brings visits to your profile. Put what people will ask for most at the top of your [link in bio](https://socialmaker.ai/link-in-bio), so people who don't comment also find their way.

![A young blond real estate agent in a mint green shirt walks down the street smiling at his phone, in front of a pink wall in the sun](https://socialmaker.ai/blog/viral-post-comments/calle.webp)

While you walk, your replies keep going out: every person gets their message within the same minute.

## What the person who comments sees

On Facebook: the person comments, sees your public reply and gets your message on Messenger with the button.

On your customer's side it's simple: they comment the word, see that you replied and get your message with the button. It all happens within the same minute, even at 3 a.m. On Instagram it works the same way, with a direct message.

## The limits Meta sets

Meta lets you send a single private message per comment, within 7 days, and the conversation only continues if the person replies ([Instagram](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/instagram-platform/private-replies/), [Facebook](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/messenger-platform/discovery/private-replies/)). On Instagram, the cap is also 750 private replies per hour per account ([Meta](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/instagram-platform/overview/)). These are Meta's limits and they apply to any tool.

And be careful how you ask. Meta lowers the reach of posts that ask for comments or likes just to get reach, which it calls engagement bait ([Meta](https://transparency.meta.com/features/approach-to-ranking/content-distribution-guidelines/engagement-bait/)), and Instagram doesn't recommend that kind of content to people who don't follow you ([Instagram](https://creators.instagram.com/faq)). Meta doesn't say that asking for a word to get the price or a link counts as bait, and in 2024 Instagram clarified that reply tools can still be used ([Social Media Today](https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/instagram-clarifies-advice-single-word-ctas-longer-reels/718151/)). The safe route: make your post worth it on its own and make the word lead to something concrete.

**Good to know**

What you can't do: message people who didn't comment or write to you. Auto-replies only write to someone who commented or messaged you first ([Meta](https://developers.facebook.com/devpolicy/)).

## What it costs to answer 12,500 people in a month

Tools that charge per contact raise their price right when things go well. This is what the month of the real case would cost, with ManyChat's monthly prices as of October 23, 2026:

| Option | Per month | How it's calculated |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **SocialMaker Starter** | **$11** | Flat price, no per-contact fees |
| ManyChat Essential | Over $1,200 | $17 with 250 contacts and $0.10 for each extra one |
| ManyChat Pro | About $540 | $39 with 2,500 contacts and $0.05 for each extra one |
| ManyChat Business | About $225 | $99 with 7,500 contacts and $0.025 for each extra one |
| ManyChat Advanced | $199 | Includes up to 25,000 contacts |
| By hand | Over 200 hours | At one minute per comment |

ManyChat's prices come from [its pricing page](https://manychat.com/pricing). To see everything that changes between the two, check [SocialMaker vs ManyChat](https://socialmaker.ai/alternatives/manychat).

**Good to know**

On the free plan, your automation answers up to 100 people a month. For a viral post, the Starter plan has no limit on people. The details are on [Pricing](https://socialmaker.ai/pricing).

## Mistakes that waste a viral post

- **Turning on the automation late:** it answers new comments, not the ones already there. Have it ready before you post.
- **A word that's hard to type:** with accents, symbols or in another language, people misspell it and get nothing.
- **The same public comment a thousand times:** use several rotating sentences.
- **A long message with five links:** a single button with what you promised.
- **Promising something that isn't ready:** if you say “comment PRICE”, the button should lead to the price.
- **Forgetting the people who didn't open it:** a friendly reminder wins back sales you'd written off.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many comments can SocialMaker answer?

From the Starter plan there's no limit on people. In the real case it answered over 12,000 people in 3 days, with hours of over 700 comments. The limits that exist are Meta's, and they apply to any tool.

### Does it answer comments that came in before I turned it on?

No. Auto-replies work with new comments, from the moment you turn them on. That's why it's best to have it ready before you post.

### Does it work on Facebook and Instagram?

Yes. The real case was on Facebook: a reply on the comment and a message on Messenger. On Instagram it works the same way, with a direct message.

### What happens if someone comments twice?

They get a single message per post. If they comment on another post, they get that post's message.

### Can I get blocked for answering so many comments?

Instagram and Messenger have limits against spam and can pause an account's messages for a while if it goes over them ([Instagram](https://help.instagram.com/436248864916865)). What protects your account most: only replying to people who commented, using Meta's official connection and rotating several sentences instead of repeating the same text hundreds of times.

### How much does it cost?

There's a free plan with 1 automation that answers up to 100 people a month. For a viral post, the Starter plan is the one to pick, at $11 a month, with no limit on people and no per-contact fees.

A viral post lasts a few days, and what you sell in those days depends on what you set up before.
